Major Qualifying Project (MQP)

MQP (Major Qualifying Project) is WPI’s senior-year capstone project, where students gain real-world design or research experience within their major field. More information and resources are available.

Topics

Data science, computational statistics, implementation of statistical methods for analyzing big data, development of computation package and software.
Statistical genetics; statistical method developments and applications in bioinformatics.
Statistical applications in engineering, design of experiments, business, and other areas.

Expectations

Research requires self-motivation, curiosity, patience, and effort.
A dedication to excellent work, going beyond the purpose of earning the credits only.
A successful project usually desires 20 hours or more per week.

Typical activities

Weekly reports, including a summary of method and result and code files, organized using GitHub.
Weekly meetings, discussing achievements, challenges, ideas, and plans for next week in line with the feedback and guidance from the advisor.
A well-written final report, satisfying requirements on organization and format.
For an outstanding project, a manuscript for preparing publication under the advisor’s help.
