CityLines

A hybrid hub-and-spoke system for urban transportation

User Interface Overview
Figure 1 shows the user interface of our CityLines system which contains three major parts: (1) Parameter Setting, (2) Result and (3) Legend. You specify a set of parameters by tuning dragging bars and click on generate button to finalize it. After that, you could review the result on Map and understand it with legend.
Parameter Setting
Inside parameter setting part, there are three different parameters could be changed.
  • Time, this parameter indicates the time range of trip demands that user want this system to handle.
  • Hub Number, this parameter is the budget of hub stations in final hybrid hub-and-spoke planning result.
  • Path Number, this parameter is the total number of direct path that are allowed in final hybrid hub-and-spoke planning result.
Result
Our hybrid hub-and-spoke planning result is visualized on a real world road map. Within the visualization result, several important information are shown directly to user.
  • About hub: We visualized physical hub locations on road network. Moreover, the spoke-pairs and traffic volume that covered by each hub could be seen when mouse is over on it.
  • About direct path: We visualized physical start and ending locations of each direct path as well as its trace on road network. For start and ending locations, a label will popup when mouse is over it. Moreover, we use a directed flow animation to represent the traffic flow in each direct path.
Example
In Figure 2, we shows an example of our hybrid hub-and-spoke planning result with trip demands data between 6am to 8am, 3 hub stations and 2 direct paths. As we can see from this figure, the planning result set one hub station in Shenzhen airport and rest of two hub stations are located at downtown area. Two direct paths connects two residential areas in Shenzhen to train station.
