Calculus IV: D'14 - Sections D01 & D02

...advising... Rules for the Special Problems

The Special Problem is an opportunity to train your skill in solving problems and possibly earn some bonus points. It is offered twice per term.

This is a supplementary task beyond the set of recommended problems - participation is voluntary.

The good 1998 movie Good Will Hunting (it has even earned a few Oscars!) depicts the situation that MIT students studying math are offered to compete in solving incredibly difficult problems, and those who succeed get a remarkable money award. A pretty fictional situation; we do not go this far.

First, the Special Problems are not so difficult. They belong to the level of regular homework problem - just require a little bit more attention and effort. No substantial hidden obstacles, no additional knowledge - what is needed is just good understanding of the current course material.

Second, instead of money (may someone regret about the change?), a few points are added directly to your final grade. Three of you who solve the SP before everybody else get these points: the first one - 5, the second - 3, the third - 2. The winner is asked to present the correct and complete solution in class in the framework of a 5 min presentation.

The procedure is arranged as follows. To claim what you have got, please send me an e-mail outlinig the main points of your solution. The message should arrive no later than a specified date and time within 24 hours counting from the moment it is announced. You only need to send 3-5-7 lines (plain text) that include a brief description of your approach and the result. If you send such a message, don't forget to check your e-mail inbox afterwards to read my response - there could be some useful comments.

The three winners are determined by the computer timer fixing times when I receive your messages.

The days when the SPs are offered are indicated in Schedule of Events, and the problem itself appears on the course web wite one day before the due date. Check the News page, it will be there.

Good luck!
