Pradeep Radhakrishnan

Assistant Teaching Professor in Mechanical Engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute

Teaching

I was a teaching assistant during my Ph.D. at UT Austin for six years for Machine Elements (Design of Machine Elements) course. The courses that I have taught/am teaching/going to teach at WPI are listed below. If you are looking to get my support with regard to a MQP related to the courses I teach or my research, please contact me via email.

ME/RBE 4322: Modeling and Analysis of Mechatronic Systems

The core of this junior/senior level course is dedicated to modeling physical systems using the bond graph language and derive the differential equations that represent different dynamic systems. Methods, manual and computational, to determine the system response are discussed. There are hands-on laboratory activities that involve disassembly, modeling and re-assembly of physical systems. There is a course project where students are encouraged to apply the techniques taught in class/lab to physical systems of their choice or their MQP work. In addition, aspects such as conceptual system design and free-body diagrams are also emphasized in this course. Additional details can be found in the undergraduate catalog.

Course Taught: Fall 2014-Term A; Spring 2015 - Term C (upcoming)

Syllabus: Revision in progress, will be updated soon

Tools used: Matlab, 20sim (may be installed in department systems in 2015)

ES 2501: Introduction to Static Systems

This first year course is one of the fundamental engineering courses that develops basics mathematical and physical reasoning skills to analyze a variety of engineering systems spread across different fields. Core concepts include understanding static equilibrium and the ability to identify and resolve forces acting in a system through free-body diagrams. In addition to homework and exams, design labs will be conducted in-class to expose students to real-world problems. This is a pre-requisite for many advanced engineering courses. Additional details can be found in the undergraduate catalog.

Course Taught: Fall 2014-Term B (upcoming)

Syllabus: In progress, will be updated soon

Tools used: Microsoft Excel, Matlab

ME 3310: Kinematics of Mechanisms

This junior/senior level course deals with position, velocity and acceleration analyses of mechanisms (linkages, cams, gears) and robots. Besides, techniques to synthesize mechanisms based on output specifications will be discussed in length (similar to this illustration ). Practical fabrication and computational projects will be an integral part of this course. Additional details can be found in the undergraduate catalog.

Course Taught: Spring 2015-Term D (upcoming)

Syllabus: In progress, will be updated soon

Tools used: Planar Mechanism Kinematics Simulator (PMKS), Matlab, Working Model (may be)

Other Courses (special topics)

Independent Study - I am interested in guiding students through project-based independent study in topics such as machine design and design automation and optimization.

Graduate/upper level undergraduate course on Optimization and Automation Techniques. This is being planned as a project-based course to be offered in Fall 2015 - Term A and Spring 2016 - Term C. This course is good if you are interested/want to learn programming and how to apply different techniques to synthesize designs in different fields.
