Research Proposal

Designing and Testing a Gamified App to Increase the Volume and Accuracy of Household Recycling

During this 5-month project, I designed and tested a gamified recycling app, Carbon Crush, which works to increase the quantity and quality of users' recycling. By doing so, this allows more materials to be recovered at material recovery facilities and turned into new materials. This in turn allows for a reduction of greenhouse gases since less energy and raw materials are needed to make new products. Carbon Crush was programmed using the Flutter framework, making it available on iOS and Android devices. Currently, Carbon Crush employs three gamification strategies (Monetary Incentive, Carbon Counter, and Stats) which were determined in a gamification strategy survey. Carbon Crush has successfully increased the quantity and quality of users' recycling and has increased users' motivation to recycle, recycling knowledge, and belief in the impact of their recycling. In the future, Carbon Crush or a similar gamified recycling app may be used to assist individuals young and old all over the world to recycle.
