Sources of Variation

It is common for measurements from the same process to vary. This is true of physicists' measurements of the speed of light. It is true of repeated measurements of the same object with a very accurate scale. It is true of virtually any industrial process you can think of. Often, in order to understand the workings of a process it is essential to understand the sources of the variation in process measurements. Appropriate plots of data can give us insight into these sources of variation.
