HUMANITIES

Humanities, taught by Mrs. Small, explores what it means to be human. Through an analysis of the educational system, language, fine arts, and sociology, students gain an understanding of how the past shapes our society and how we got to where we are today. The class focuses on readings and group discussions and also includes films and writing.

This was the first essay of the year that I had to write for Humanities. After diving into the edcuational system in the United States, we were tasked with writing an argumentative essay on any topic related to education. I chose to write about music and fine arts education, which is a big passion of mine. This was my first time writing such a long essay mostly in-class, and I feel it is also one of my best essays.

After beginning a new unit (in the new year!), we were tasked with creating an AP-style Document Based Question. My group chose to analyze the effects of the commercialization of Cinco de Mayo in American culture. However, after writing these prompts we also had to respond to one - I chose to respond to one group’s DBQ question about the effects of book banning. This was my first synthesis-style essay ever written!
