One of the major components of Massachusetts Academy for Mathematics and
Science students is the junior research project. This project must be
done in one of the sciences, mathematics or technology. We spend a
significant amount of time preparing juniors with the skills necessary to
complete this research and mentor them throughout the project. Although
striving
for completion by the regional science fair in March, we encourage strong
projects to continue until the state fair at the beginning of May.
One of
the most important things we do is to help students arrive at good
questions. Here are a few of the activities we do to help them and us
evaluate and refine their work. This is done after assigning the
project, very generally, the preceding spring and having them read a
couple
of recent acticles on thier topic of interest over the summer without any
screening from
the staff.
