Matrices and Linear Algebra II
MA 2073
C Term, 2010
Syllabus
About the Course | This
course
provides a deeper understanding of topics introduced in MA
2071
and also continues the development of those topics. Topics
covered
include: abstract vector spaces, linear transformations,
matrix
representations of a linear transformation, characteristic
and minimal
polynomials, diagonalization, eigenvalues and
eigenvectors, and inner
product spaces. This course is designed primarily for
Mathematical
Science majors and those interested in the deeper
mathematical issues
underlying linear algebra. Undergraduate credit may not be
earned both
for this course and for MA 3071. Recommended background: MA 2071. |
Exams |
The
mid-term will take place around February 8, the mid-point of
the course. The exact date will be
announced later. The final will take place on March 5, the
last day of
the course. Exam makeup policy: Makeup exams will be allowed only in the event of a documented medical or other unforeseen emergency. You are responsible for avoiding foreseeable conflicts with the exams. |
Homework |
Homework assignments will
be
given frequently. Late homework policy: To receive full credit, homework assignments must normally be handed in when due. Assignments may be turned in late with a valid excuse; however, this must be discussed with me and approved in advance if possible or otherwise at the earliest opportunity. Without an approved excuse, assignments may be turned in one class period after the due date for 50% credit. Unexcused late assignments will not be accepted after the first class period following the due date. |
