Calculus IV
MA 1024, Section D04
D Term, 2010
Syllabus
About the Course | This
course
provides an introduction to multivariable calculus. Topics
covered include: functions of several variables, partial
derivatives
and gradient, multivariable optimization, double and
triple integrals,
polar coordinates, other coordinate systems and
applications. Recommended background: MA 1023. |
Exams |
The
mid-term will take place within a few days
of April 6, the mid-point of the course. The exact date
will be
announced later. The final will take place on May 4, the
last day of
the course. Exam makeup policy: Makeup exams will be allowed only in the event of a documented medical or other unforeseen emergency. You are responsible for avoiding foreseeable conflicts with the exams. |
Homework |
Homework assignments will
consist of problems from the text. Some of the problems
will be
“starred”; solutions of these are to be written up and
handed in. The
other problems are for additional practice; you are
expected to
understand how to do these but are not required to hand in
solutions.
Assignments will be given out each Monday, and writeups of
the starred
problems are due the following Monday. The grade for each
assignment
will be based on one or two of the starred problems chosen
by the TA
after the assignment has been turned in. Late homework policy: To receive full credit, homework assignments must normally be handed in when due. Assignments may be turned in late with a valid excuse; however, this must be discussed with me and approved in advance if possible or otherwise at the earliest opportunity. Without an approved excuse, assignments may be turned in one class period after the due date for 50% credit. Unexcused late assignments will not be accepted after the first class period following the due date. |
Conference |
In this, students
will meet with the TA and have an
opportunity to ask questions about the homework and the
material
covered in class. The TA may also review course material
during the
conference period. There will normally be a short quiz
involving one or
two problems during each conference period. Conference quiz policy: Each quiz must be taken in the conference session in which it is given. There will be no makeups of quizzes. However, your lowest quiz grade will be dropped in computing your quiz average. |
Labs |
In these, you will use
Maple
software tools to gain additional insights into topics
covered in the
course. These are an integral part of the course but are
run
independently of the lectures and conferences. Be sure
that you are
aware of all lab policies regarding grading and other
matters. |
Lecture
Attendance |
This will not be monitored
but
is expected. You are
responsible for
knowing everything said or covered in class. |
