About me!

Hello! My name is Shreya Devarajan and I’m currently a junior at MAMS. I live in Chelmsford and I attended Chelmsford High School for my freshman and sophomore years. While at CHS, I discovered my immense passion for the STEM field, which eventually led me to MAMS. I hope to expand my way of thinking and have the opportunity to work in a more collaborative environment during my time here.

My family consists of my mom, my dad, my younger brother, and me. Ever since I was little, my parents have surrounded me with Tamil in my household, so I can speak and understand it well. This immersion in culture from a young age allowed me to embrace it and shaped me into who I am today. My family and I travel frequently and just this past summer we went to LA and Las Vegas. We often go to India, but we couldn't last year due to COVID. I enjoy traveling especially because I get to visit my family and see how people in different environments live and compare it to my way of life.

Dance: Outside of school I’ve been learning Bharatanatyam, Indian classical dance, since the age of 5. Bharatanatyam is considered the oldest classical dance form and originated in Tamil Nadu, India. I learn at the Natyamani School of Dance in Westborough under Guru Sridevi Ajai Thirumalai. Dance has always been an integral part of my life and it has allowed me to become connected with my roots. Throughout the year, we usually perform at multiple fundraisers and temples for festivals and other occasions. Getting ready and practicing with my friends is by far one of my favorite things to do. Even through COVID, we continued to have classes through zoom. I have met some of my closest friends through dance and I hope to pursue this art form well into my future.

App Development and Machine Learning: Over the course of quarantine and the 2020-21 school year, my friend and I prepared a research paper titled "Using Convolutional Neural Networks to Detect and Classify Cancerous Skin Lesions." Our project idea centered on allowing users to take a photo of a lesion, which our software then categorized and alerts the user to take action accordingly. To do this we proposed to use TensorFlow and CoreML models, which would later be converted into an iOS app.

DECA: At CHS, I was a part of DECA during both my freshman and sophomore years. This past year, me and my partner got 4th place and were able to make it to states under the Innovation Plan division. Our idea was an app along with a waterproof clip and wrist band that would report information about the users UV exposure. The app had preprogrammed information about temperature and ozone layers and asked for user input as soon as it was downloaded. This app could then send personalized reminders about sun screen application due to automatic detection of changes in the UV index. My partner and I learned so much from this experience. I not only learned how to do a sales pitch, but also how to improve my work ethic and public speaking skills. It also taught me that working with other people and bouncing ideas back and forth is one of the best ways to brainstorm.

Tennis: Another thing I love to do in my free time is to play tennis, which I have been doing since fifth grade. At CHS, I was on the Varsity tennis team in both freshman and sophomore year. Tennis practices acted as a way for me to distress after a long day at school. Even the matches, although stressful, were super fun and rewarding in the end. Unfortunately, our season got cut short in freshman year, but I am so happy that I got the opportunity to have a season this year and to meet so many new people.
