Bird Sightings:

12/31/12 -- Douglas
My feeders have been very busy lately. This morning, I had a song sparrow hanging out under my feeder next to the white-throated sparrows, juncos, etc. (report from Mary Sughrue-Yacino).

12/30/12 -- Northborough
Sitting at my kitchen table this morning, I observed 3 Blue Birds, a Red Bellied Woodpecker, and a Carolina Wren at my feeders. (report from Henry Squillante).

12/30/12 -- West Boylston
Found about 30 pine grosbeaks in the fruit trees along Prospect St. in the Wachusett Country Club parking lot at about 3:30. I believe these were first posted by Mark and Sheila on the 24th. Here is yet another backlit photo, but one showing that they are seed eaters. (report from Garry Kessler).

12/29/12 -- Sturbridge
Before the snow came, a pair of Pileated woodpeckers landed on a tree in our backyard in Sturbridge. (report from Bob Barnes).

12/28/12 -- Burncoat St, Worcester
I saw 2 Bald Eagles flying over while driving along Burncoat St. (report from Dave Grant).

12/28/12 -- Bart's Pond, Clinton
This afternoon I checked out Bart's Pond (aka the pond that never freezes), since Coachlace was frozen over. There was a Redhead (f) among the many Canada Geese, Mallards and Black Ducks. (report from Peter Morlock).

12/27/12 -- Worcester Landfill
From 146S @ Worcester Landfill: At about 2:45pm I observed approximately 400-500 American Crows headed west, presumably for the evening roost. Instead of a steady stream of birds headed in a vague line towards Leicester, these birds were circulating continually above the old landfill. This was seen while driving by in my vehicle, so could not determine presence of Fish Crow. (report from Lisa Hennin).

12/26/12 -- Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester
At 8am there were 8-12 pairs of hooded mergansers in the river behind the cemetery. (report from Debbie Gleason).

12/25/12 -- Deer pond drive, Leicester
While leaving my girlfriends house around 4pm, there was a flock of about ten pine grosbeaks feeding in a crabapple in someone's front yard. All female. (report from Josh Gahagan).

12/24/12 -- Wachusett IBA, Sterling/Clinton

12/2/12 -- Gull Shooting at Worcester Airport?
We were birding at the front lot of the Worcester Airport Sunday afternoon when we noticed the security car across the tarmack stop and the police man got out and started shooting. Now we thought he was firing off an air gun (and maybe he was) but then we noticed him firing all over, even down, and at a flock of Horned Larks. Then we witnessed as he picked up two dead gulls and the other guy in the car got out a plastic bag and they put the gulls in the bag. Are they shooting gulls there? If not, what was going on? Does anyone know the policy of shooting at the airport? And firing at a flock of larks seems absurd. BTW: others people were there when we were and all agree it looked like they were shooting gulls.
    (report from Mark Lynch).
