12/29/07 -- Quabbin Christmas Bird Count
C.B.C. - QUABBIN

Date: December 29th, 2007

Weather: Pre Dawn- rain. (Owling kept to a minimum)

                Dawn-10:30am- Dense fog.

                11:00am-dusk- Fog lifted/Partly Cloudy/light wind

                Temp: 33-42 / Snow Cover: 0-8” / Water : main body -Open.

                Ponds/Inlets- Frozen.

Despite the poor viewing conditions in the morning, the Quabbin C.B.C. managed to
pull out 70 species, one short of the record 71. However, the combination of poor
visibility, early season snowstorms, (limited access to areas inside Quabbin) seems
to have had an impact on overall numbers. The C.B.C. managed two new high counts,
but failed to add any new species to the overall list. Many thanks from Jim Lafley
and myself to all the

Observers who came out and braved the elements. Complete list below…

12/18/07 -- Sturbridge CBC
The STURBRIDGE CBC was held on TUESDAY DECEMBER 18. Towns found wholly or partially in the circle include the "Brookfields" (North, South, West, East); Warren; Sturbridge; Brimfield; Holland; Wales; Southbridge; Charlton; Spencer, locations many eastern birders have likely rarely visited. People all over the circle were still digging out from the recent brutal snow and ice storm. Many pull-offs and parking areas were still not plowed out, and roads were consequently narrow and edged with deep hard snow banks. It was treacherous walking in many places. My team could not even get into most sections of the Quabog WMA simply because there was no place to park or pull-over. Because of the recent extremely cold temps, almost all "standing" water was frozen (with some small open spots still), and even most moving water was frozen too. This was the most ice-covered I had seen the Quabog River since the count began. This meant that waterfowl numbers and variety were way down. Starting temps for the morning was a rather brisk MINUS 6 degrees F, though it "warmed" into the high 20s and very low 30s by late afternoon.

None of this deterred a large, and very determined group of CBC-ers, some of who donned snowshoes and ventured out over ice-crusted snowfields and forests. And despite all the snow, ice and cold, 80 SPECIES WERE TALLIED: with 4 new species as well as 19 new high counts for species, including a new high count for a species of waterfowl!
