- Rutland: Nancy Demers and I walked part of the Central MA Rail Trail in Rutland today
and found Coltsfoot blooming in a number of spots along the trail. We left
the Rail Trail and took the path that circles Muddy Pond then reconnects
with the Rail Trail. On Muddy Pond were 10 ring-necked ducks (9 drakes); a
few wood ducks, mallards, and Canada geese; a pied-billed grebe, and a great
blue heron. We heard then saw a brown creeper along the way.
This is a great trail for anyone interested in wildflowers--trailing arbutus
(Mayflower), wintergreen, and goldthread abound along with a bit of
checkered rattlesnake orchid. We'll return in May and June to see the
flowers.
We made a quick stop on Coldbrook Rd, heading toward Barre Falls Dam, and
found one Hepatica blossom just opening. There will be more in the next few
weeks.
- Grafton: The GLOSSY IBIS reported by Terry Clark a few days ago was seen at St.
Philip's Cemetery in Grafton, in the tussocks at the shallow end of the
marsh, near the vantage point behind the wooden "fence." There was a good
bit of activity at the great blue heron nests, with one or two herons flying
back and forth collecting rather pitiful twigs for the nests.
