Humanities is taught by Ms.Small. The curriculum is an intersection between English and history. In this class, we analyze texts and videos, write essays, hold large class discussions, and complete bi-weekly journals. Some of the societal topics that we cover include racism, education, and identity. Along with this, we strengthen our writing skills through satires, rhetorical analysis, and other essays. Writing in humanities class involves a lot of creativity as we often develop our own prompts, have freedom with topics, and do creative writing assignments such as creating original satires.
In October, we were tasked to write an essay about a topic of interest regarding education. For my essay, I chose to write about how different ages of teachers affect education. My main inspiration for this topic was a class discussion where we were trying to determine the ideal age for a teacher. The answer was unclear as both younger and older teachers have their own strengths and weaknesses, which urged me to explore the topic in further depth.
Another essay that I wrote this year was a satirical analysis that discussed the effectiveness of a satirical work compared to a straightforward, statistical text when trying to convince the audience to stop their contribution towards the fast fashion industry. Fast fashion raises various ethical concerns, therefore I wanted to determine which style of writing was most effective in conveying the message.
