ES 3004 - Overview

Course Description

This course provides an introduction to fluid mechanics. The objectives are to provide students with a quantitative understanding of and ability to apply the relevant physical properties and fundamental laws governing the behavior of fluids. Students learn how to solve a variety of problems of practical interest to engineers and scientists, and will receive preparation for higher-level courses in fluid dynamics.

Course Outline

Fluid pressure and manometry
Pressure forces, moments and structures
Buoyancy, stability, and rigid body motion
Fluid properties and fluid shear
Mass flux, fluid velocity, and velocity fields
Control volume approaches and Reynolds Transport
Conservation of mass and conservation of momentum
Bernoulli equation and conservation of energy
Drag and lift forces
Dimensional analysis
Differential analysis of fluid flow
Viscous fluid flows and flow in pipes

Course Textbook

The textbook is "Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics" by Munson, Okiishi, Huebsch, and Rothmayer (7th edition). The class makes use of an online course management system called WileyPlus. This system provides an electronic version of the text, along with a wide variety of accompanying materials. It also provides for homework problems that are included in the class The subject includes four in-class quizzes (typically worth 88%), four written/submittal homework sets (typically worth 6%), and four on-line assigments through the WileyPlus system(typically worth 6%)
