PLENARY I

Thursday, 6 March 1997

7:30 - 8:30 p.m.

Location: BOSTON-CAMBRIDGE

Introduction: E. J. Piel, Chairman, Conference Planning Committee

Speaker: James Hamos, Director of the University of Massachusetts Medical Center Office of Science Education

Topic: "Science and Technology Standards: A View from the Field"

Dr. Hamos will greet incoming NASTS members and orient them to science education in local public schools. Hamos served on the committee that recently established State standards and guidelines based on the National Science Education Standards. He has also been involved in the efforts to develop a science curriculum for the Worcester Public School as a local resource person.

The State standards are a little less open to STS than the national Standards, and the local curriculum a little less so than the State standards. However, the inquiry-based theme of the standards, as they have appeared locally, is open to STS, even if it falls short of mandating social contexting as a primary teaching strategy. The language of technological literacy and citizenship training does appear in the State standards, though in Worcester that is not the emphasis until seventh grade.

9 p.m., Dessert Reception SPRINGFIELD
