if science fiction came into its own in the nineteenth century, then science fiction film emerged in the twentieth century as a complementary and contrastive phenomenon that drew on, extended, and transformed the themes and tropes of the genre. in this seminar we will consider the aesthetic, political, and social impact of a range of science fiction films from georges méliès's le voyage dans la lune (1902) through guillermo del toro's pacific rim (2013), looking also to works in related film genres such as the action film and the western, to works of film criticism and theory, and to works in other media forms from graphic novels and short stories to radio plays and television shows. project options will include critical and interpretative essays, digital humanities pursuits, documentary mashups, and original short films.
