Images of Rock Climbing on "Hangover" on Cathedral Spires in Sedona, Arizona (1999)

This is a pretty good aid route called "Hangover" that goes at Grade IV, A3, 5.9, 3 pitches [FA John MacDonald, Pieter Dorrestein & Isaac Shaffer, 1999]. The climb is located on the wall on the formation of rock behind the Mace as you view it from the approach on the trail from the parking area on Back O' Beyond road. To reach the climb, approach the Mace and the scramble up to the notch to the right of the Mace. From the notch you should see an overhanging wall off to the right with a very wide chimney (3-4 feet) above it that has vegetation growing in it near the top. Pass through the notch, and scramble down and to the right. Pass by the notch immediately to the right and scramble up to the overhanging wall. There is a dark, overhanging, manky corner on the left side of the wall that is not worth all of the effort you or your partner will expend climbing it (trust me on this one). The route starts in the middle of the wall on a thin continuous line that takes knifeblades and thin lost arrows. There is a slot for a #3 camalot about half way up pitch 1. The first pitch, which overhangs by about 15 feet in 70 vertical feet, is the best part of the climb. Pitch 2 wanders up and right on soft sandstone past a few bolts to the base of the chimney. Pitch 3 ascends the wide chimney on manky sandstone past some nice cactus. I recommend the first pitch. Gear: standard desert rack.
