Humanities

This course, taught by Ms. Small, employs a diverse range of literary, historical, and cultural texts, alongside essay composition, collaborative projects, and classroom debates, to explore the fundamental inquiry of what it means to be a human. It focuses on how perceptions and interpretations of 'humanity' have evolved throughout history.

Walden Skit

After reading Walden, by Henry David Thoreau, we were assigned to groups early on in the year to create a skit based on the book or characters. For our skit, we created a parody where Thoreau goes to fight in the Mexican-American war, making hilariously ignorant remarks and eventually meeting his demise. This is our script.

Satirical Analysis

In the satire unit, one of our projects involved selecting satirical material to analyze its effectiveness or shortcomings as a satire. I chose to write about 'Grendel' by John Gardner, a reversal of the traditional epic 'Beowulf,' and how it successfully uses satirical devices to highlight flaws in Anglo-Saxon society.
