My name is Anna Wyndham, and I am a junior at the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science, also known as MAMS. I am from Upton, and my sending school was Nipmuc Regional High School. We have not always lived in Upton, we moved there from Douglas when I was in first grade. I live with my mom, dad, and younger brother Nico, who is 14. We have one dog named Wilma, she is two years old, and she is a lab-terrier mix. She was a rescue animal from Pawfect Life Rescue, and is adorable, super calm, and playful.
I am an Irish Dancer for the Murphy Academy of Irish Dance in Grafton where I have danced for the past three years. Overall, I have been dancing for almost eleven years. Some of my favorite aspects of this sport are competing, performing, and practicing, but I also love just spending some time with my friends at dance. Irish Dance allows me to be creative, and is an amazing outlet to go to when I am stressed or just need to do something fun. I also sometimes help teach classes with the younger dancers at the studio, which is always fun as they keep you on your toes the entire time. The photo shows me in my costume before our regional championships last year. I will be forever grateful for all the amazing lessons I have been taught through doing this sport from both friends and teachers. It has taught me to always work hard to achieve my goals and how to manage my time between this and school. Time management is one of the most valuable habits that I have developed, and will be especially important at school this year.
Some of my other favorite things to do include reading and cooking. I love to bake and make meals for my family. I am an avid reader, and spend most of my free time doing that. I have always loved to read, and it is something that has stayed with me since I was a lot younger. Some of my all time favorite books include, "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde, "Pride and Prejudice" by Jane Austen, and "Chain of Gold" by Cassandra Clare. Of course, this list changes quite often.
I am lucky to get to travel with my family, although within the past year we have been enjoying the adventures that our home can give us. Last Christmas, my family and I went to London and Paris, which was one of the best experiences in my life. The photo is of me and my mom at the Palace of Versailles. I was so lucky to get to soak up the sights and enjoy time with my family. Both cities were some of the most beautiful places I have ever seen, and I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to go there. My favorite place that I have traveled to has to be Mexico, as I have extended family there, and I love the culture as well.
At my sending school, I was involved in two community service groups, the Impact club and Peer Leadership. These were both groups that provided volunteer opportunities within our school and surrounding community. I was also a member of the Student Council. I would help organize school events such as Homecoming, and I attended a conference as well with some other members of the student council. Last year, in order to apply for the National Honor Society I had to organize a community project. I chose to host a STEM workshop for girls in our area at the library. I enjoyed sharing a passion of mine with younger girls, and showing them fun experiments and activities while also teaching them something new. It is important to me to make sure that other kids get some of the same opportunities I got as a child to learn more about the world and STEM. This year at MAMS I have joined Arduinos and CAD as my A term extracurriculars. I also had the opportunity to volunteer at the Community Harvest in Grafton with some of my classmates. This was a great experience as I feel it is so important to always try to give back to the community in many ways.
I work at my mom’s company, Promoting Good™, where I help her with her social media and anything else she needs. I answer emails, proofread documents, and take care of her instagram and other social media platforms. I also design most of what she posts, along with her logo. It may seem weird that my mom is my boss, but I actually enjoy the work a lot. The tasks that I do for work have taught me many valuable things such as how to manage finances of a company, and how to communicate with professionals in certain fields.
