Our very first assignment in Humanities this year was to create a skit based off of the material we read in Walden by Henry David Thoreau over the summer and present it at Bournedale Camp. My group (Arnav Gupta, Riley Harn, Venkatraman Varatharajan, and myself) decided to create a skit where some of the most known billionaires and trillionaires are transported back to Thoreau's time, and they can't get back. With Thoreau, they learn about the simplicity of life and how money isn't always the solution to everything, but rather taking time to reflect and respect other people and nature is fulfilling. For this essay, I chose a prompt that asked to discuss the satirical devices and how they help the overall message and impact for the satire “ A Modest Proposal” by Jonathan Swift. “A Modest Proposal” was a really interesting piece talking about poverty in Ireland and how England had a role to play in it, and the author discusses a solution that may not be everyone’s idea. This was an in-class essay and I’m really proud of myself since the analysis in this essay is really detailed for the amount of time we had. Click here for the full essay.
