This long-lost helmet is from an armor in the Army History Museum in Vienna, ascribed to Gilbert von Saint-Hilaire (d. after 1619), commander of the Imperial Austrian naval arsenal. Saint-Hilaire entered imperial service in 1574, campaigning against the Ottoman Turks and Protestant rebels in Austria. Black-and-white armor was popular with combat soldiers as the painted surfaces made polishing unnecessary, and when combined with "white" (polished) areas, gave otherwise plain armors a more attractive, and somewhat menacing appearance.
