  Bogdan Vernescu
Mathematical Sciences Department
Short bio  Bogdan Vernescu has been since 2003 Professor and Head of the Mathematical Sciences Department at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI). His research expertise is in the areas of homogenization, fluid mechanics, porous media and composite materials. Vernescu has also held visiting positions at MIT and in France at the University of Metz, University of Nancy, University of Savoie and University of Rouen. He is an honorary member of the Institute of Mathematics of the Romanian Academy.

In 1997 Vernescu co-founded at WPI the Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics (CIMS) - an effort designed to integrate academic projects in mathematics and statistics with the corporate world – and was its Director until 2003. CIMS provided a coherent format for developing industrial undergraduate, graduate and faculty projects with more than 35 corporate customers and attracted significant funding from the National Science Foundation, the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the GE Foundation and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.

In 2007 he became the founding President of the National Professional Science Master's Association (NPSMA) and is currently serving on its Board of Directors. Started with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the NPSMA is a membership association that promotes and supports the growth and development of Professional Science Master’s (PSM) degree programs.

Vernescu earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the Institute of Mathematics in Bucharest, Romania, and his B.S. and M.S. degrees in applied mathematics from the University of Bucharest in Bucharest, Romania.
