The Rundown
For those of you who didn't make it out to the tournament yesterday, let
me just fill you in on a bit of what happened. By Saturday night we
finally had seven people committed to heading down for the tournament.
After being the first team to arrive and waiting around for an hour, games
finally started around 11:45. Our first game was against Brandeis. As
long as I've been on the team, WPI had never beaten Tron, until this
tournament. The game was very close, with the lead exchanging hands
frequently. Finally, the cap went on with us leading 8-7, which meant it
was a game to nine. After Brandeis put a quick one in, we marched up the
field without turning it over to put it into the endzone (with Brennan
catching the score).
Our next game was against Roger Williams University. We've had a grudge against these guys ever since they beat us at URI, and then again at Yale. They're a great bunch of guys and girls and a ton of fun to play with, but the last couple times we've played them we haven't been able to put it all together. This time as different, though, as we raced out to a quick 7-3 halftime lead. We stumbled in the second half, letting them catch up and eventually tie the game at 11-11. Knowing what we had to do, we stepped up our game and scored the final two points, playing great defense to shut them down. We also experemented with a new 2-3-2 zone in this game and found that it worked well.
After a long break, our final game was against the hosts, Wheaton College. After taking a bit of time to warm up as much as we could, we took to the field with our first sub of the day. Jay from Bridgewater was a great addition to the team, with solid throws and some phenomenal catches. At the beginning of the geam, our play was very stiff and we were committing a lot of unforced errors. But after letting them take a 6-4 lead, we didn't let them score again, winning the game 11-6.
We celebrated our tournament victory with hot chocolate and a cheer, then headed back to Worcester as the 2004 Snow Bowl Champions. It was a great start to the year and we showed glimpses of what we're capable of doing this spring. Imagine what we could do if we had subs!
Yeah Bullets!
