2002 South New England College Sectionals
The Rundown
For those of you who were not
around to experience the fun and excitement of the college sectionals
championship, here's how it went this weekend...
Saturday was a gorgeous day with plenty of sun and little wind. WPI's
first two games were against Brown C and Wesleyan B. Both games were
dominated by WPI with scores of 13-0 and 13-4, and helped WPI gain some
confidence before playing Brown A, the third placed team in the nation. WPI
played amazingly well against Brown A, scoring 4 points more than they had
expected, and finishing the game with a score of 4-13. The last game of
the day was against Connecticut College. Conn. had been waiting around and
were anxious to play. Similarly, WPI was anxious to beat Conn. after
realizing that they could play respectively well against any team in the nation.
However, a win was not in the cards for this last game. Conn. got ahead in
the first half and WPI could only match points with them in the second half,
finishing with a score of 7-13.
Sunday's weather was completely opposite of Saturday's. The rain poured,
the wind blew, and all players were doomed to be wet and cold all day. WPI's
first game was against Yale. Again, having confidence that they could
score against a top team, WPI played well but gave up many points due to drops.
The final score being 0-13. Not wanting to end the day on a score like
that, WPI played Conn. again for a chance to go to regionals. Things didn't look
good for WPI at half time when the score was 3-7. But WPI put their hearts
into the game and eventually brought the score back to at tie at 11-11. At
this point, even WPI's captains were beginning to believe that they could take
the game and go to regionals. But a few quick points gave Conn. the win,
regardless of many sick layouts by numerous WPI players. It was a great
last game, played with spirit and amazing intensity.
Hopefully you have read this email and realized that WPI can be a fierce
competitor on the ultimate field. It should encourage you to play ultimate
this summer and be a better player for the fall season. It should
encourage you to come to every practice next fall, and help the team get to
regionals next year!
Thanks for a great season.
