About Me

Hello! My name is Tanay Mangal, and I am a junior at Mass Academy. Before coming here, I attended Shrewsbury High School where I joined as many STEM related clubs as I could like Math Team and Astronomy Club, while making time for Robotics, Chess, and Taekwondo. I’ve always been fascinated with space and engineering, and I want to become an Aerospace Engineer. This year at Mass Academy, I am excited to improve core skills by joining clubs like CAD and Robotics.

General Me

Chess

I fell in love with chess when I was 6 or 7, starting out by playing for fun. Over time, this casual interest developed into an obsession, leading me to compete in over 100 in-person tournaments and building crucial connections within my community. During COVID, my relationship with chess shifted and instead of trying to master the sport, I turned to helping my community. I became a certified tournament director, organizing events both in and out of school.

Taekwondo

At the same time, I began playing chess, I also started practicing Taekwondo. Currently, I am a second-degree black belt and have competed in many different competitions. Most recently, my team competed at the World Taekwondo Hanmadang and got second in the Demonstration Elite Category. Beyond competitions, taekwondo has been a place where I’ve developed discipline, self-control, responsibility, and perseverance. Additionally, I have volunteered around 300 hours at my local dojang: U.S. Taekwondo Center.

Math

Outside of school, something that I have always loved to do is mathematics, whether that be competition mathematics or mathematical proofs. At my sending school, I was a key part of many of the competitions they participated in, such as WOCOMAL, MAML, and AMC. Additionally, I competed in some events on my own last year, such as PIMC Gauss and MathCON.

Robotics

In tenth grade, I joined 467, my sending school’s robotics team. I was able to get involved in a wide variety of aspects such as CAD and Machining, but also Impact, Outreach, and even their website. I volunteered at almost all the events they hosted last year, and I was able to integrate myself into the FIRST community while dipping my toes into engineering for the first time. I plan to take these skills and apply them to my experience at 190, learning more about CAD and Fabrication while also working on Impact and social media.
