Outreach

Prof. Camesano has been an active participant in a number of K12 programs including:

4 Schools for WIE
During this 3 year NSF-funded project, teams of faculty, alumni, and undergraduate students formed partnerships with middle-school science teachers in the Worcester and Boston areas. Our goals for this project were to help teachers introduce engineering in their science classes by developing a set of gender equitable curriculum modules and by establishing the presence of engineering role models in the middle-school classrooms. More information on the project, including the manual we developed to help other schools create STEM teams can be found at www.stemteams.org

WPI Bio-Discovery Program
In 2005, Prof. Camesano received a grant from the NSF to create a center for undergraduate research at WPI. This program (REU: Integrated Bioengineering Research, Education, and Outreach Opportunities for Females and Underrepresented Minorities at WPI) brings 8 of the most talented undergraduate students to the WPI campus each summer, and allows them to actively engage in bioengineering research with faculty and graduate students. As a part of this program, we developed a 2-week camp for middle-school and elementary-school girls, known as the WPI Bio-Discovery Program. This is a unique opportunity for young girls to gain exposure to a real research environment.
