Tau Beta Pi History

Tau Beta Pi is the only engineering honor society representing the entire engineering profession. It is the nation's second-oldest honor society, founded at Lehigh University in 1885 to mark in a fitting manner those who have conferred honor upon their Alma Mater by distinguished scholarship and exemplary character as students in engineering, or by their attainments as alumni in the field of engineering, and to foster a spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges.

There are now collegiate chapters at 232 US colleges and universities, active alumnus chapters in 16 districts across the country, and a total initiated membership of 497,152.

The Massachusetts Alpha Chapter of Tau Beta Pi was installed at Worcester Polytechnic Institute on May 14, 1910. Throughout the year, the chapter participates in many projects - both social and community service. Past projects have included pediatric parties at UMass Medical Center, the Freshman/Sophomore Design Competition, Sophomore of the Year Award, and kazoos at QuadFest.

Features of Tau Beta Pi Membership

Being a Tau Beta Pi member is more than just another organization for your resume. There are a number of benefits that the National Office provides.

Fellowships

Based on need and merit, a Tau Beta Pi Fellowship provides $10,000 for a year of graduate study at an accredited institution. Fellowships may be used for any field that will contribute to the engineering profession, making them extremely flexible. Upon completion of the fellowship year, the student's only requirement is to submit a report summarizing his or her work.

Scholarships

The Robert E. Nagel Scholarship offers a $2000 award for senior engineering students. Awards are based on merit, and have no additional requirements. This year, Tau Beta Pi has received a large endowment for scholarships such as there are more scholarships than current chapters. All juniors are strongly encouraged to apply.

Awards

The Laureate program offers awards to Tau Bates who exemplify the "spirit of liberal culture in engineering colleges." The award is given in the categories of arts, athletics, diverse achievements, and service. Each chapter may nominate a candidate. The winners are awarded $2,500 cash and recognized at the convention.

Loans

Tau Beta Pi offers student loans for amounts between $25 and $2,500, to be repaid over 3 years at the low interest rate of 6%. These loans are available for both undergraduate and graduate members.

Student Assistance

Funds are available for students who no longer have the financial resources to remain in college. These funds do not have to be repaid, and no interest is charged.
