Colloquia
Here at WPI, we have 2 lines of physics colloquia. One, the more standard, is the colloquia put on by the physics department. Most departments put on weekly colloquia at a regular time, and the physics department is no different. These are generally each Monday at 4 in OL 223. Along with being on the physics department web page, information about each upcoming physics colloquia can be found here.
The other set of colloquia is the Wonderful Speaker Colloquia. Wonderful Speaker is special, for although there are only one or two per year, it is put together by the students. The students pick, contact, and host physics professors from all over. WSC is coordinated by SPS. Usually, the Wonderful Speaker Coordinator is a single person, but this year (2009-2010), it is an email committee. If you wish to participate in this committee, both with deciding who to invite and the actual invitation, email Elizabeth Gould. If you simply wish to submit a suggestion, please send the professor's name and email address to wsc-committee@wpi.edu.
The nice thing is that there is no real limit as to who we can invite. Instead of paying the professor to speak, we instead offer to compensate for their travel, meals, and lodging, and have them speak for free. As this cuts down significantly on how much it will cost to get the professor to come here, even the big names are feasible. You can find the list of the scheduled Wonder Speakers here.
