Welcome!

About Me!

My name is Saara Patel! I’m currently a junior at the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science. Before applying here, I attended the Harvard Public Schools. I participated in grades kindergarten through fifth grade at Hildreth Elementary School and grades sixth through tenth at The Bromfield School. I have lived in the small town of Harvard, MA, since I was three years old, previously living in Attleboro, which is about forty-five minutes away. At home, I live with my mom, dad, two older brothers, and my grandmother. Though I have lived in the U.S. for the entirety of my life, my family comes from Gujarat, India, where I have visited once!

Community Service

Community Service

Another thing about me is that I love giving back to the community! In the past, my friend and I created a book drive that we were able to give to less fortunate schools in our respective countries. We obtained hundreds of books from our schools, general store, and library. Personally, I went to India and delivered them to my dad's old elementary school. My friend flew to Zimbabwe. Now, we want to take the next steps! We are working on profiling less fortunate kids and providing them with basic necessities in order to look at their growth both through school and home activities.

Additionally, to attend Mass Academy, we are required to accumulate fifty community service hours, all of which I completed during the summer. First, I went to help at the Community Harvest Project, collecting and packaging fruits and vegetables. This was an opportunity presented to me at my previous school through a club called “Bromfield Cares,” in which we volunteered at various places. Another place I helped at was Habitat for Humanity in Leominster. There, I was able to not only assist a team of volunteers in providing houses and materials to customers, but I was also able to gain valuable retail experience that I can apply to various other situations.

Last school year, when I was a sophomore, I decided that I wanted to further explore one of my passions, healthcare. Starting in August, I attended a class, instructed by 2 EMTs , and held at The Harvard Police Station. Classes were held at a fixed schedule; we had classes on Sundays from 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM and classes on Tuesdays from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. At first, adjusting to the extra responsibility was difficult, but as the class progressed, I got better at managing it as well. To assess our knowledge, we took quizzes throughout units and were expected to perform scenario-specific practicals on trauma, medical, CPR, oxygen administration, and splinting at the end of the class. For a final step before receiving our certifications, we were required to take (and pass) the official American Red Cross exam. By this point in November, I knew I wanted to do more with my knowledge. After winter break passes, I applied at my local police station to be a cadet. After a long selection process and an interview, I was able to attend shifts and emergency calls that we received, both expanding my knowledge and helping others in the process.

Extracurriculars

Saara and tennis team

At Bromfield, I was fortunate to participate in math team, model UN, speech and debate, student council, and student government! After school, I was a part of our cross-country team, outdoor track team, and tennis team. Although I do not play badminton for a team, I also enjoy playing it at home with friends or family!
