Wedgefic 2006
Wedgefic is a speculative fiction magazine for college student authors.
Submissions open:
Jan 1 - May 2 2006 (note: Writing contest deadline is March 2)
Send submissions to: wedgefic@wpi.edu or sfs.writing@gmail.com
Use "SUBMISSION: your name" as the subject line.
If you have something written, please attach it as a word document.
For comics/art, attach it in a format convenient to you (.jpg is preferred)
For other formats, please query for special considerations. wedgeficwpi.edu or sfs.writinggmail.com
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
(please read these carefully before submitting)
1) We're specifically looking for short stories or finished (inked) comics by college students. Poetry, not so much. Other more speculative forms of storytelling will be considered as long as it can either be printed or put on a website. (Yes, we're trying to get a website)
2) The writing in question must be speculative fiction. In other words, they must have some sort of science-fiction, fantasy, horror, or other weird element to it. We don't restrict submissions to a certain genre like space opera or sword n' sorcery, but we do want your writing to be true to the interests of our group.
Feel free to cross boundaries in terms of genre, setting, and style. If you want to write a story in modern day New York City, go ahead -- as long it has something that makes it more than a story about everyday life. If you're interested in that sort of writing, query the WPI Writing Group. It's a cool organization, and it covers what this publication doesn't.
3) Including sex in your story is fine, but it should not be the focus of your piece. In other words, no erotica or pornography please.
4) You do NOT have to be a member of the WPI Science Fiction Society, or affiliated with WPI in any way, shape, or form to submit to Wedgefic. Submissions will be taken from any quarter. However, we do prefer college students' work over non-students.
5) Story submissions should be between 1,000 and 5,000 words long. We'll look at other lengths, but a piece at 10,000 words leaves a lot less space for other writers, so unless it's phenomenal, it's got less of a chance of making it.
6) Comics should have a maximum of ten 8.5 x 11 inch pages. Your stories must therefore be concise and carefully plotted. We unfortunately do not have room to print much more.
7) Multiple submissions are fine and encouraged. So are simultaneous submissions -- just let us know if the story is accepted elsewhere.
8) Similarly, reprints are fine as long as you retain the rights to
your story. Since Wedgefic isn't going to make money any time soon,
NAFPR aren't a big deal for us. We only ask for one-time North
American serial rights.
9) We cannot consider fan fiction unless you have the express permission of the original creator, or a license to use their work (Creative Commons counts). Please make sure the intellectual properties in your work belong to you, or are credited properly.
10) If you have questions, you can direct them to wedgeficwpi.edu or sfs.writinggmail.com
CONTEST GUIDELINES:
1) The only contest entries considered will be short stories.
2) To enter the contest, you must be in some way affiliated with the WPI Science Fiction Society. Membership is usually a good litmus test for that.
3) Prizes are determined by the number of entrants received. They will have a specific monetary value, in the form of either a check or a gift certificate to That's Entertainment, a hobby store on Park St. in Worcester.
4) There is a minimum prize of $20 in the event that there is only one entry in the contest.
5) Placing in the contest is a guarantee of publication in Wedgefic 2006. Entering the contest is also an implicit submission to Wedgefic 2006.
6) Writers may enter any number of entries into the contest as desired.
7) Contest submissions must be in by March 2. You may still submit to Wedgefic for two weeks after this, but the contest will be closed on March 2.
8) Any questions can be sent to the email addresses above.
