Objectives:
The course has been designed for civil engineering students with no background in construction management. It is intended to provide a basic understanding of the concepts, principles, techniques, business methods and practices that are regarded central to the modern management of civil engineering projects.
Textbook:
"PROJECT MANAGEMENT FOR ENGINEERING AND CONSTRUCTION", 2nd Edition
by Garold D. Oberlender (McGraw-Hill, 2000)
"Skyscraper"
by Karl Sabbagh (Penguin Books, 1989)
Additional material not contained in the textbook and referred to in the lectures will be distributed to the students in class.
Assignments:
There will be five assignment sets containing problems directly related to the lectures. Evaluation on these assignments will be based on the thoroughness, correctness, organization, readability, and punctuality of the submitted solutions. Solutions to the assignments will be worked out by groups or individually.
Each group submission will include a one-page "management report" describing how the group did the work. The report should describe distribution of work among group members, minutes of the group meetings (date, place, attendance, agenda, and action items). Groups should be ready to make at least one 5-minutes presentation to the class during the term.
Term Project:
A term project with two partial submissions during the course will be given. It is intended to:
- Provide an opportunity to integrate material covered in the course into a more comprehensive exercise.
- Expose students to the implications of analysis and decision-making related to construction project management.
- Demonstrate the impact of the design on the constructability of the project.
- Illustrate the use of modern computer-based management tools in the planning, scheduling, and control of construction projects.
Teams of a maximum of three students will work the project.
Lectures & Conferences:
The class will meet for an hour session four times per week during the term. During these sessions material related to the subject will be presented and discussed. Guest speakers may also be invited during this time or a field trip to a nearby construction site may be scheduled. Also, solutions to homework assignments and questions related to the term will be specifically discussed. Five minutes "management report" presentations will be made. Finally, computer tutorials may be given to the students or films related to the course material may be shown.
Computers:
Use of application software for the solutions of some of the homework problems and project work will be required. PRIMAVERA Project Planner is available through the WPI Novell Network. A student version for this course is available from PRIMAVERA SYSTEMS (please contact the instructor if you need more information on this regard). PRIMAVERA has excellent on-line documentation, however good reference material is provided by "Construction Scheduling with Primavera Project Plannner" by D. Marchman (Delmar Publishers, 1997)
The course web-page will be used to post information related to the course. The Blackboard System version 5.0 supported by WPI will be used for this purpose. This system is also known as "myWPI" The URL for the system is: http://my.wpi.edu/. To gain access to "myWPI" you need a username and password. For all users, the login name is your CCC Unix login and your temporary password is the last four digits of your social security number (if a user does not have a SS#, then it is the last four digits of your campus ID number). For best results with this system, CCC recommends to use Internet Explorer. Once you login into "myWPI" you should get "CONTRUCTION PROJ MGT" listed under "My Courses" (provided that you have registered to take this course). Click on it and the course web-page will be displayed on your screen.
Examinations:
There will be two in-class examinations. The exams will test the students understanding and working knowledge of material covered in the lectures, conferences, assignments, and project work.
Grade: The grade for this course will be based on:
. Homework Assignments (20%)
. Term Project (30%)
. Examinations (50%)
