Mass Delta
Historical Tidbits
- When Mass Delta only had the White House, Room 3 used to
be the EAs room. This of course changed with the addition of the brown house, and
the room was changed to 10.5 in 1969.
- The dumbwaiter that is in the White House was built by the
class of 1953 as a pledge project.
- A dead person was found in the Brown House when Mass Delta
first acquired it. He had died that summer.
- Theta Chi occupied the former building at 1 Lancaster
Terrace, which is now the parking lot.
- The Lion in the fireplace is one of two that were
originally fixed where the current Lions are now in front of the White House. The story
goes that there used to be a woman who was like a little sister to the house. She died at
a very early age. Her grandmother either paid for the lions, or donated the money to buy
them. These Lions lasted until December 24th 1978.
- The reason that there are new lions at the front of the
house is that on December 24th 1978 the house was vandalized (Windows and
spindles broken, Lions broken off their mounts, one destroyed beyond repair). Over $3500
worth of damage was done to the house by that years standards.
- The Higgins house would have belonged to Mass. Delta if
not for his wife! Mr. Higgins wrote his will around 1955. In his will he felt that
it was proper to give the Higgins House to Massachusetts Delta. Unfortunately, Mr. Higgins
died before his wife. During his last year he was suffering from dementia. As a result of
this since his wife was executor of his will, she said he was not competent when he wrote
it. She then challenged his will and Massachusetts Delta lost. After both of her two
children declined to accept the house when she tried to give it to them, she gave it to
WPI, who used it to further their own needs. Here are some photos of what could have been
Mass Delta.
- The badge on the front of the white house used to hang on
the right posts of the entrance porch. It was moved because of Vandalism.
- The flag of the EA is the same one that was on Wes
Florias coffin.
- The SAE in front of the White House in the sidewalk was
put in there in 1959.
- The Penny in the Brown House foundation was put there in
1972
- The "Widows Walk" was removed from the roof in
1969
