Why Phi Sigma Sigma?

  • The people
  • Community service
  • Traditions
  • Higher standards of living
  • Scholarship
  • Sisterhood
  • Fun!!!!!

You can walk away from college with a degree, or you can leave knowing that part of you will always be there; left behind because you were part of something larger than yourself, larger than just WPI. It is that bond of sisterhood shared by the girls in your chapter; the ones you meet at Founder's Day, the Phi Sigs you will run into as you go through life. The reason you join is not always the reason you stay, but you get out of it what you put into it. The sky is the limit - aim high.

Overview...

Recruitment occurs during the first few weeks of B-tern every year. Recruitment allows women to meet all three sororities at WPI and is moderated by the Panhellenic Council (Panhel). Panhel is made up of women from each sorority and are a great resource for information about recruitment, especially:

Audra Sosny: Panhellenic Council President
Sarah Gilkey: VP Recruitment
Emily Perlow: Greek Advisor for WPI

The first information sessions about recruitment are provided by Panhel and occur during the end of A-term. These sessions provide an overview of recruitment, answer any questions that you might have, and allow you to talk to sisters in each of the sororities.

Guidelines...

So you can better understand the recruitment process...

The Panhellenic Council has set up rules for sorority members and potential members to follow during the recruitment process in order to make the process as easy and stress-free as possible for all women who are interested in recruitment. Below is a list of guidelines that potential members will be asked to follow during the recruitment process. If you have any questions about these guidelines, then please ask your Recruitment Counselor or email any of the Panhellenic officers.

  • All potential new members must be regularly matriculated students at WPI and must pass 2/3 unit of classes in order to be eligible for Formal Recruitment. Freshmen and upperclassmen enrolled in semester classes must supply a note verifying satisfactory prograss (SP) in that class.
  • In case of illness or other emergencies, the potential member is to notify the Panhellenic VP Membership Recruitment and/or her Recruitment Counselor. Upper-class women registered for Formal Recruitment will be considered potential members once Formal Recruitment begins.
  • Withdrawn potential members are not eligible to return to Formal Recruitment or to receive a bid during Formal Recruitment.
  • To withdraw from Formal Recruitment, a potential member must first speak with the Greek Advisor, the Panhellenic President, or the Panhellenic VP of Recruitment.

They will further explain the recruitment process and answer any questions you might have. They will also walk you to and from the recruitment events. Along with the counselors, the following Panhellenic Council officers are disassociated until the end of recruitment: President, VP Recruitment, and Judicial. Listed below are the disassociated officers and recruitment counselors for the 2009 fall recruitment:

The Process...

The first part of the recruitment process requires you to register. Registration will be available in the Campus Center, outside of the dining hall, and online starting the first day of B-term.

In order to take part in recruitment, WPI states that you must be in good academic standing, meaning you have to pass at least two out of three of your classes from A-term. By registering, you are allowing Panhel to make sure you are eligible by checking your grades.

A full description of events can be found in the calendar... recruitment begins with house tours of each sorority with Recruitment Counselors leading you to the three different houses. Following house tours, four recruitment events are held, where you meet sisters and learn about different events we partake in. It's a great way to see if you are interested in joining a sorority and see which sorority is right for you! After these events, there are Preference Parties for each sorority, where you get to see more of the traditions for each sorority. The following day is Bid Day, where you will see which sorority you received a bid to in your WPI mailbox!

After Recruitment...

After Recruitment ends, New Member Period begins! This is time for new members to learn about Phi Sigma Sigma, the sisters, the traditions, and partake in our events! New Member Period is a very important part of Phi Sig, and we love getting to know our New Members and introducing them to all Phi Sig can offer! The program provides the resources that promote a strong commitment to academics, illustrates how new members can embrace the differences that make each sister unique, and encourages new members to learn the importance of serving others. It presents methods for obtaining support during scholastic challenges, for interacting with a diverse mix of women, and for participating in meaningful community service activities. As a new member realizes the vision of our organization, she grows with her chapter as it works concurrently to reach tangible goals consistent with our core values.

Along with participating in the activities, attending meetings, and actively learning about Phi Sig, there is a financial responsibility. The dues you pay go to help pay for sorority events and programs, both local and national. We want to make joining Phi Sig possible for everyone, so money is not an issue. The Bursar (Treasurer) is ready to help you find a way, whether it is through scholarships, grants, or payment loans.

Your new member period is only the beginning of your time with Phi Sigma Sigma. Your rewards of what you will learn and experience will benefit you throughout the rest of your WPI career and beyond.
