Hello! My name is Philip Economou, and I am a Junior at the Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science. I am sixteen years old, and was born in 1999. I have one sibling, my younger brother Julian, shown here with myself and our parents. I'm the one on the right.
Before entering Mass Academy, I attended Doherty Memorial High School, here in Worcester. My favorite subjects have always been math and science, so I am thrilled to have the opportunity to study here. I find it amazing how something as fundamental as numbers governs all the processes of our entire universe, and look forward to exploring this in my years in the Academy and in my future career.
Interests and Hobbies
I have been competing in the sport and martial art of Judo since I was eight years old. Judo is similar to American wrestling, but is done in a uniform called a gi, and places more emphasis on throws and takedowns. Although not widely known in the United States, Judo is massively popular world wide, as the second most played sport globally. It is even in the Olympic Games! This is me making a throw during a 2014 competition. I ended in second place.
In 2014, I began practicing guitar and have been at it ever since. Classic rock is my favorite genre to play and to listen to, including bands like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin . Recently, I have been trying to be more well rounded. My community service project, in which I played for residents of Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, really helped me with this.
I also very much enjoy reading. Science fiction is my favorite genre, but I read all kinds of books. Currently, I am enjoying Fyodor Dostoevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, a classic novel translated from 1800s Russian.
