From the Producer ...New Voices is WPI's annual festival of original plays. This, however, is a simple explanation for those of us who have been involved in this incredible experience. To us, it is a living classroom and living art. New Voices is a time for new people to try new things. It is a time to create and a time to express yourself. I have always seen New Voices as a time for people to move outside their comfort zones and try something new. This can be someone who has never been on stage taking an acting role, an actor trying their hands a tech, or someone who has never been involved in theatre trying it out for the first time. While enrolled at WPI, I would be heading to the New Voices auditions and a friend would say "Oh, I was thinking about doing that, but I don't know." Next thing they knew, I would be leading them by the hand into Alden Hall. I cannot remember a single person who got involved who did not enjoy themselves. This is not only a time for students to get involved, but faculty too! This year, I am also trying something new. Producing a show of this size is an exciting undertaking for me. As an alumnus, I am meeting many new and talented people who are already involved in the festival. As we move through auditions and into production, I hope to see many more get involved. Few college students have an opportunity to experience everything that theatre has to offer, from acting to directing to lighting designing to producing. There is something for everyone in New Voices. Join us and find out for yourself. ~ Shauna Malone, Producer, New Voices 23 |
