Our client, Gloria Frongillo, is an 80 year-old woman
afflicted with arthritis in her hands and wrists. She finds
simple tasks such as carrying a glass of water or folding
blankets difficult. Her main problem lies in transporting
objects up and down her stairs. Because of her disability,
she must grasp the railing and pull herself up the stairs, making
it impossible for Mrs. Frongillo to carry anything requiring two hands.
Mrs. Frongillo's form of arthritis is rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic and inflammatory
disease that affects her joints and wrists. Symptoms of RA include swelling, stiffness, warmth,
redness, or pain in the hands or wrists.
Currently, there is no cure for RA. Treatment includes physical therapy, icing and heating, cortisone injections,
or anti-inflammatory drugs. All of which are short-lasting. On some days, Mrs. Frongillo's arthritis is too severe
to even pick up a pencil.
