This course is taught by Mr. Barys and his teaching philosophy is characterized by continually asking us to do things that are just beyond our capabilities or comfort zone, so that we have to stretch our minds to get the job done.
Recently we watched a highly entertaining production called 'Fermat's Last Tango,'a fictional musical loosely based on Andrew Wiles' work to find a proof of Fermat's Last Theorum.
Every week or so we are assigned a POW (Problem Of the Week). One recent example involved gumballs. About a month ago, our school also participated in a thirty-six hour long math competition. A copy of my group's solution is located here.
One focus of the class at the beginning of the year was statistical modeling. An example of some of the techniques we used can be found here, with the corresponding Mathematica code displayed. This eventually led to a study of basic functions, as illustrated in this assignment. Recently, my class was split into groups, two of which were tasked with learning, understanding, and ultimately presenting the information contained in a packet explaining Discrete Dynamical Systems. The Mathematica slideshow my group used can be found here.
