
Constitution of Mu Sigma Delta:
Article I. Name and Purpose
Section 1. Name of the Organization
The name of the organization is the Pre-health Society, designated by
Mu Sigma
Delta.
Section 2. Purpose of the Organization
The purpose of the organization is to convey information and provide
unique
opportunities for all WPI students with interests in the health
professions.
Article II. Membership
Section 1. Requirements for Membership
All persons enrolled at WPI for undergraduate or graduate work are
eligible for
membership. The only premise
is that
students have some interest in a career in a form of the health
professions and
attend at least one (1) meetings a term.
Section 2. Privileges of Membership
a. All members of this organization will be included on the
msdmembers@wpi.edu mail
alias. They will have access to this information network to improve
their
pre-health experiences at WPI. The mail alias will be the only
official form of
written communication between members of this organization and
between the
students and the advisor(s).
b. All members, that denotes all students on the mail alias list,
will be able
and encouraged to run and vote for offices.
c. By becoming a member of Mu Sigma Delta, students have access to
many unique
opportunities as well as a way of easily contacting fellow students
with
similar interests.
Article III. Officers
Section 1. List of Officers
This organization shall include:
a. President
b. Vice-President
c. Treasurer
d. Secretary
Section 2. Qualifications of Officers
All of the officers must be members of the organization and have a
strong
commitment to the health professions. There are no age/class/major
restrictions
on officers.
Section 3. Duties of Officers
General: All officers should be familiar with the Constitution and
have an
updated notebook containing an organizational handbook as well as any
other
information pertinent to their positions.
a. The President shall oversee the general operations of the club.
That person
shall moderated club meetings, serve as a general liaison between the
advisor(s) and members, oversee and maintain the integrity of
elections, and
coordinate any other activities necessary for the smooth operation of
the
organization. That person should also be familiar with the WPI
organizational
student handbook and, along with the advisor(s), be kept informed of
all major
club decisions.
b. The Vice-President shall aid the President in managing the
organization.
Both the President and the Vice-President shall hold each other
accountable in
the completion of tasks within the organization.
c. The Treasurer shall be responsible for fundraising and fund
management. That
person shall be responsible for requesting money from the Student Government Association or other
department/organization if necessary. That person shall
maintain
accurate financial records, with all responsibilities and decisions
concerning
the club's financial status in cooperation with the faculty
advisor(s).
d. The Secretary shall keep accurate records of all club/officer
meetings and
be responsible for publishing the minutes through the mail alias.
That person
has access to the alias account and is responsible for keeping that
list up to
date. That person is also responsible for general publicity,
publishing
articles of importance, and coordinating all club activities.
Article IV. Election of Officers
Section 1. Time of Elections
Elections shall be held at the end of C term for the next academic
year. The
exact date shall be established by the President and/or advisor(s).
Due to
extenuating circumstances, a special election can be held to fill a
vacant
position until the end of that academic year. In the event of such a
vacancy,
the president may appoint an interim officer. That newly appointed
officer
shall hold office until a special election can be held to either
confirm or
reject the appointee.
Section 2. Election Procedures
Nominations shall be taken for officers for one week prior to
elections. All
voting for officers shall be by private ballot. No absentee ballots
will be
allowed. The current president shall count the votes and announce the
newly
elected officers for the next year at the election meeting. The
individual wit
the most votes will be elected to office. If the vote is close (the
advisor's
discretion), or there is a tie, then co-officers are allowed provided
that 2/3
of the voting members are in support of co-officers. As stated
earlier, all
persons on the mail alias are considered members of the organization
and have
voting rights.
Article V. Meetings
Section 1. Regular Meetings
There shall be at least one meeting per term for the
organization.
Section 2. Special Meetings
Special meetings can be called at any time by consensus of all
officers. If needed, the advisor(s) can circumvent the officers and
call a
meeting without their approval. This is not the normal mechanism for
calling
meetings.
Article VI. Quorum
Section 1. Definition of Quorum
A quorum shall consist of all officers and at least
50% of the
membership (officers are included in the membership count as
well).
Section 2. Necessity of a Quorum
A quorum shall be required only for the election of officers for he
upcoming
academic year and for amending the Constitution.
Article VII. Amendments
Section 1. Amendment Meetings
Special amendment meetings may be called by three or more members
with the
permission of the advisor(s). Amendments may also be looked at during
the
regularly scheduled term meetings.
Section 2. Amendment Process
At an amendment meeting, any member may introduce an amendment and
open
discussion on it. Amendments must be ratified via the same voting
procedure as
officers, except that they must be approved by 2/3 of the voting
body.
Article VIII. SOC & Organization Affirmation
Clause
Section 1. Affirmation Clause
MSD agrees to abide by the policies of Worcester Polytechnic
Institute as well
as all federal, state and local laws. Any changes to this
constitution and/or
bylaws will follow, in word and spirit, all WPI policies and all
federal, state
and local laws.
