Course Description
This course provides an introduction to the techniques for characterizing groundwater flow and contaminant transport in order to control pollution and protect groundwater supplies. The course will emphasize the use of numerical models for predict flow an
d transport of contaminants in groundwater. Course material is intended to satisfy the requirements of those who have not had - as well as those who have already taken - an introductory graduate groundwater course (equivalent to CE 542). The first few l
ectures will include a review of the basics of groundwater flow. Additional topics will include numerical modelling, groundwater modelling using the Modflow, contaminant transport in groundwater, transport modelling using MOC, and system design for pump
and treat groundwater remediation systems.
Schedule
Lectures meet on Wednesdays at 5:30 PM in Room 116 in Kaven Hall. The subject content is defined by material presented in lectur
es, so regular attendence is advised.
Textbook
Groundwater Remediation by Bedient will serve as a background text for this course. The text will be supplemented by lecture notes and handouts.
Grades
The grades for this subject will be based on a takehome quiz, homework problems, and projects, which will be equally weighted in determination of the final
grade.
Projects
The course will include an independent project, in which students are able to focus on a modelling/remediation project that is in the area of interest and
provides some background regarding groundwater flow and remediation.
