04.25.2003 Meeting Minutes

The first meeting with Mike and Hilary (or Hayes and DeNoia) as presidents was a smashing success.

--- New Voices ---
Stef announcing:
Thank you all for helping. It went great and it was so much fun. There was almost a full house every night. Congratulations to everyone.

--- The Deputy ---
Tara announcing:
The five male roles have been cast. In the role of Gerstein is Andrew Hansford, Mike Caprio will be playing Riccardo, the Doctor will be Joe Reinsch, The Cardinal will be played by Jacob Given and Dan Gilbreath will be playing Jacobson. There will be more auditions in the fall for the remaining roles. There are some really good parts that will be cast then.

--- Arsenic and Old Lace ---
Josh announcing:
Some preliminary auditions were held for the roles of Martha and Abby. So far things are going really well. If you would like a production position please contact Joshua True and Tara Ellsworth.

--- Alpha Psi ---
Will announcing:
The past Friday of New Voices, there was an awesome and very memorable induction. Congratulations to the inductees. There was an important voting meeting after the Masque meeting.

--- Susan ---
“When giving a speech, be sincere, be brief, and be seated.” -- Franklin D. Roosevelt

---Welcoming New Voices ---
Mike & Hilary announcing:
During A term we’ll be greating all the new people that come to campus and encouraging them to join theatre. We’ll show them what we’re doing here. The exact plans are still in the works and they’ll be firmed up by A term next year. Welcoming New Voices will be the Friday of the MW Rep show. Email suggestions for what to do.

--- Sunburns ---
Diane announcing:
There will be a meeting next Thursday and the following Thursday both at 7. Both in the Campus Center (1st in the Morgan room, 2nd in the Taylor room). Any ideas for shows with production staffs and all the requisite information, email Sunburns.

--- GI ---
Ben announcing:
GI’s last show of the year was a few weeks ago and it was mind-blowingly great. Guerilla Improv will have enough people to do improv-y things over the summer. So if you happen to find yourself in a place that needs improv email Ben.

--- Kilroy ---
They had a show last night, “Stop Encouraging Us!” with Casual Sketch from UMass. Went really well; funny *and* free refreshment. Tonight (Saturday) there is a preview showing of “Disc,” Kilroy’s first feature length motion picture at 7:30 in Perrault Hall in Fuller Labs.

--- Ben ---
Okay so change of plans. Instead of going off to Florida after school, he’ll be headed to Oklahoma. And then Florida … eventually.

--- Trivia ---
So the question this week was: What are the differences between the paper posters for New Voices and the poster printed on the back of the T shirts? The answer is T Shirt says Sex "m" , poster says Sex "E;" T Shirt says Height " 5'09" " the poster says Height 14p; the T Shirt says Restrict IB, the poster says Restrict 1SD; the T Shirt says License # is 0123456789, the poster says License # is 0100001101. The answer was provided in various forms by Amanda Jean Nowack and Mike Schenck. Yay for cool people who answer trivia. :-)

--- Others ---

  • Hilary & Mike – The Wednesday of orientation is the Activities Fair. The annual time when freshman sign up for clubs. Masque will have a table, so if you're around then let us know or stop by and help.
  • Hilary – If you have any suggestions for the C term show next year email her at hhayes@wpi.edu. Also email if you’re interested in a production position.
  • Chris – It was her birthday on Friday! We all sang (not very well, but we did). Tonight (Saturday) in Alden is a big orchestra and choral production. They're doing a whole assortment of Broadway songs. It’s at 7:30 and it costs $3 to get in.
  • Diane – She’s having a senior voice recital tomorrow (Sunday) at three o'clock in Spaulding Recital Hall (basement of Alden underneath the green room). She’ll have a professional accompanist with I8 as well. It’s a culmination of all her vocal work here.
  • Dean – Each year the Class of 1879 gives out prizes for outstanding projects in the humanities. There were three given out this year. And one went to our own Ben Sandofsky for his adaptation of David Mamet’s “The Shawl.” Or David Hamet’s, or is it Hamlet?
  • Paul – On May 21st Paul is doing the lighting design for a play about a women who lives in a society that suppresses knowledge. It’s an interesting precursor for his MQP because it uses all automated lights.
  • Hilary – If you would like to be added to an email list for auditions to cool shows in the greater Massachusetts area, email her to be added.
  • Chris – The Barre players are performing “Into the Woods” soon. Email her at cdupree@wpi.edu to get more information when it becomes available.
  • The picture for the yearbook was taken after the meeting. Yes it was finally taken so if you skipped out on the meeting you missed out.

Well that was the last meeting of the year. I’ll see you to kick off drama for next year at the activities fair and Welcoming New Voices. :-) And best wishes to all the awesome seniors leaving us, you’ll be sorely missed.
-Sarah Pavis

04.18.2003 Meeting Minutes

No Masque Meeting Due to New Voices.

04.12.2003 Meeting Minutes

This was Vickie’s very last meeting as president. But that’s okay, we love her! Thanks for a great year Vickie.

--- New Voices 21 ---
The show starts Wednesday!! Whoo! It’s going to be really great. The set is just about done, and it looks awesome. All the help on the set is very much appreciated. There is no production meeting Monday because of tech run-throughs on Sunday and Monday. If anyone has any questions, talk to Stef.

--- The Deputy ---
We are looking for an on-campus publicity assistant. If interested please see or email Tara ASAP or email Laura.
Auditions - we will only be auditioning 4 or 5 or the male roles on April 21 & 22. Callbacks will be April 23rd. All of these events will be in the Green Room. Females are welcome to audition for male parts. All other parts will be auditioned at the beginning of A term.
auditions: April 21,22 6-9pm, green room,
callbacks: April 23, 6-9, green room
read-thru: April 25, 6-8:30, green room
we'll worry about fall auditions later in summer.
the show dates: September 25,26,27, Riley Commons (we get it Sep.20)

--- Arsenic and Old Lace ---
This was Susan’s last meeting as the default Arsenic person. Anyone out there still interested in being one of the two fine elderly women in Arsenic can email Susan. She will announce who is playing the roles of Abby and Martha prior to graduation. There were several people in Australia who expressed interest, so to be fair to all, the casting decision will be held off until everyone interested has been able to audition.

--- Alpha Psi Omega ---
The super fantastic induction cast for this semester’s induction into Alpha Psi Omega, Rho Kappa cast is: Chris Cenotti, Jake Given, Paul Messier, Stef Carney, Chuck Wilcox, and Josie Jaecksch.
The induction ceremony will be Friday following announcements after New Voices.

--- Susan ---
“It ain’t over till it’s over.” -Yogi Berra

--- Sunburns ---
The show will be picked after New Voices. If you’d like credit, see Susan. If you're going to be here for the summer anyways you should participate! It’s fun!

--- GI ---
Sunday is their big show. It will be 7 pm in Riley Commons even thought the movie on the Quad was moved to Harrington. Last week’s workshop went great. They’ll be going to see a one man show by the Improv Boston guy who taught their workshop. Should be cool.

--- Kilroy ---
Kilroy destroyed the Alma Mater competition. They re-performed it at the Gong show which Kilroy and GI emceed. April 25th in Fuller is their show “Casual Sketch” along with the Poetry Dudes. The major epic “Disk” will be shown for the first time ever on April 26th in Kinnicutt.

--- Ben ---
At least it’s not snow.
He’ll be going on vacation to Florida at the end of the month, and got Chinese food after the meeting. To which Vickie replied hat she was moving to California and was Chinese.

--- Trivia ---
The trivia question this week was “what size film does omnimax theaters use?” The correct answer was 70 mm. The correct answer was given by Kelly and Ben gave me some cool facts about how it was loaded horizontally because of the size and also that because of the giant film, movies tend to be under 2 hours so that they don’t take up an extra reel.

--- Others ---

  • Me – The Activities Fair is this coming Wednesday. If you would like to coerce- I mean, publicize masque to all the pre-frosh let me know. You have to be free part of the time around 12:45 to 2:15.
  • Stef – Ryan’s band “Portable Heroes” played last night in Riley Commons. I hear they were awesome.
  • Mike – Still homeless for next B term. L If you need a roommate for B term, contact Mike.
  • Vickie – If you have dirt on a graduating senior let me and Kelly know. So that we can get them…. appropriate presents.
  • And Vickie wanted to say that it was really great being your president and she’ll miss everyone in California.

--- Susan ---
“Half a man’s life is devoted to what he calls improvements, yet the original has some quality which is lost in the process.” -- E. B. White

--- GI ---
The Comedy Jam went well. April 13th 7 p.m. in Riley Commons is the last GI show of the year. *tear* They’re going to test out they’re all new format! Also they hired a pro from Improv Boston for workshops. So it should be a whole lot of fun.

--- Kilroy ---
UMass was fun, thanks to everyone who came. This Thursday Kilroy will be doing their special rendition of the WPI Alma Mater. Any moral support (in the form of wild clapping to sway the judges) you can give would be much appreciated. April 25th is the date for their next show entitled “Casual Sketch.” It will be in the Odeum, check their website for more.

--- Susan round 2 ---

--- Ben ---
It’s cold. Where did spring go?

--- Trivia ---
“When was Alden built?” 1939. First with the correct answer was Charles Wilcox and giving the interesting fact of being renovated in 1992 was Ben Sandofsky. I didn’t grab the prizes before my rehearsal before the meeting so they’ll get their prizes with next weeks winner(s) next week. It’ll be prizealicious.

--- Others ---

  • Hilary – Alpha Psi’s MS Walk was this past Saturday. They trudged out in the sleet to walk, but they did.

The schedule for the festival has been sent out and the schedule for tech will be coming out shortly. There are less than three weeks until the festival! (Susan: tempus fugit…) Hope everyone’s excited! If you still have the energy and desire to help out email Stef.

If you are interested in either of these roles please email Susan (svick@wpi.edu) by Wednesday, April 16, 5 p.m. Also email Susan to get a hold of copies of the script to read ahead of time for these roles. Check it out. There big roles that are a lot of fun. See also the email that Susan sent out on Friday with more information. These are the only two roles that will be cast prior to next year. Susan wants to work on character development and getting costumes ahead of time, although you won’t have to stay over the summer or anything to work on it.

--- GI ---
(Ben couldn’t be there so I read the GI info for him)
The Cambridge Union Debate was a success. Thanks to all who showed. GI performed at UMass Amherst on Friday. I’m sure they were great! They’ve got a big show planned April 13th. As of now, it is officially titled "Guerilla Improv: Reborn". The official GI website should be updated so check out www.guerillaimprov.com. In one sentence: 7 pm, April 13th, in Riley Commons, before the Movie On the Quad. Invite everyone.

--- Kilroy ---
You can still probably catch Kilroy at UMass if you jump in your car and leave now. Hopefully their show goes well. They will also be having a show here at WPI later this term.

--- Ben –-
(I got to do Ben time too! Although I’m, sure I did it with much less funny. )
Ben – “Apparently people didn't understand that, last week, I was laughing at Dance Dance Revolution meets Iraq because there was something about the juxtaposition between the two icons of pop culture. Pop culture you ask? Iraq is just as pop culture as OJ Simpson and Monica Lewinski were in their times. I'd have laughed just as hard if I'd seen someone leading a protest rally on a Segway. Sometimes you can't explain why, but you've just got to laugh!”

--- Trivia ---
This week’s question: What year was “Arsenic and Old Lace” made famous on the silver screen by Cary Grant? The answer: 1944. And the correct answer was provided by the fabulous Stef Carney in under a minute and she got stuffed dalmaition binoculars as her prize. This insanely speedy response time inspired me to create a new trivia prize category. First prize, same rules apply, first to email with the correct answer wins. Second prize, the person who provides the coolest trivia fact about the question which I ask will get a prize. Answers for this will be accepted, roughly, up until 4 on Friday.

03.21.2003 Meeting Minutes

It is abso-frickin-lutely beautiful out today so I hope everyone’s enjoying it.

--- New Voices ---
Stef: All plays are cast and there have been rehearsals this week. This weekend form 2-4 in the afternoon in the sub basement of Alden Sasha, Matt, Dave and Ian will be meeting with director-y people to talk about props, lighting and the set respectively. Email Ian (rimm@wpi.edu) if you’re at all interested in working on the set. There is a production meeting at six o’clock on Monday. Also, Stef *still* needs a running crew chief. It’s really a whole lot of fun and we’ll love you forever if you do it. Email Stef for more information.

--- Alpha Psi ---
Will: Nominations are open for the D-term 2003 induction class of Alpha Psi Omega, Rho Kappa class, until 5 p.m. Friday March 28, 2003. Anyone can nominate someone for induction, and nominations are open to anyone involved with theatre at WPI. Also you may nominate as many people you like. To nominate someone please e-mail alphapsi@wpi.edu stating who you would like to nominate and why, if you would like to nominate someone anonymously, don’t sign the e-mail and the officers will be the only people who know you nominated that person.
Hopefully this will clear up any ambiguity I may have caused in reporting the minutes last time.

--- Susan ---
“Leadership: The art of getting someone else to do something you want done because he wants to do it.” -- Dwight D. Eisenhower (who also coined the military-industrial complex)

--- MW Rep ---
Tara: The fall show “The Deputy” has set their performance dates for September 25-27. Auditions will be the Monday and Tuesday after the New Voices festival, and call backs will take place after that.

--- GI ---
Ben: Next Thursday Guerilla Improv will be debating with The Cambridge Union (a British debate group) in their typical “this house believes…” format.
GI will also take part in the UMass Comedy Jam. The whole event will be from Friday May 3rd at 7 p.m. and Saturday May 4th at 7 p.m. GI will be performing Friday. GI is also doing a show for Quadfest on April 13th as part of the ‘new dawn’ of GI. The new GI will be all professional and take their improv to a new level. They want to retain their core audience through their format switch but seek to expand and change.

--- Kilroy ---
Kilroy will be taking part in the UMass Comedy Jam either Friday or Saturday. They will also be doing some Quadfest goodness. Kilroy will be doing their rendition of the Alma Mater at Founders Day. *AND* they’ll be having a show sometime later in the term.

--- Ben ---
While in the CC today he looked in the food court and saw the people doing DDR and thought that they were doing a DDR dance rendition of what was going on in Iraq. He thought it was cool. Some people at the meeting felt… otherwise.

--- Trivia ---
Me: The trivia for this week was “How many theaters are in “Broadway” and how many of those are on the physical street of Broadway?” Elliot got it correct and got a wacky laughing alien furby.

--- Others ---

  • Dave: Dave will be in the shop starting at one o’clock on Saturday working with set stuff.
  • Tara: Interstate 8 will be performing in Boston at a charity concert to benefit the Elizabeth Glazer Pediatric Aids Foundation. It will be 7 pm March 22nd (tomorrow). Tickets are $8. There will be a bunch of awesome a capella groups including Simple Harmonic Motion as well as others.
  • Elliot: Alpha Psi will be taking part in the MS walk April 5th. Three of the member’s parents have MS as do, I’m sure, many people we know. So find a few bucks for a good cause, it will be appreciated.
  • Sara Strecker: Alden Voices will be performing at the Missa Gaia along with the Choral Arts Society and Men's Glee Club. It will take place this Sunday at the All Saints Church in Worcester at 4:30 pm. Tickets are $12 but it’ll be great.
  • Mass Academy will be performing “Rumors” which (I hear) is an awesome play we should all go and see.

That’s it for this week. Enjoy the weekend!
-Sarah Pavis

03.14.2003 Meeting Minutes

Stef would like to thank everyone for auditioning. Callbacks took place directly after the meeting in various rooms in Alden and the Campus Center. Everyone is now cast! Cast lists can be found on the bulletin board outside the green room. Go and check it out and initial by your name if you accept the role.

---Susan---
“All great ideas are dangerous” -Oscar Wilde

---GI and Kilroy---
GI and Kilroy did a zany competition improv show together yesterday (Friday) at 8. It was called Theater Sports and there was free pizza! Unfortunately New Voices production staff peoples couldn’t go, but I heard it was great!

---Ben---
His coronation as new Masquot went well, many showed to celebrate. In other news: Del Close, an actor in the Chicago comedy improv troupe Second City, willed his skull to the Goodman Theater in Chicago. He wanted it to be used as the part of Yorick in Hamlet. Plus of course his name will always be on the playbill.

---Trivia---
This week’s question was, “What was the name of cirque du soleil’s new touring group that came from their reality show? And what is the name of the reality show?” The new tour group is Vareki and the reality show it came from is “The Fire Within.” Ryan Petti won a very flattering grass skirt and coconut cup.

---Others---

  • Sasha is looking for people interested in dramatic interpretation. It will be presentations of short plays or monologues or sketches with few actors. It will be something short term, low stress, to practice public speaking, acting, and expose yourself to a different kind of play writing than the big productions masque usually does. Contact her for more information.
  • Ben pointed out Adam Ribaudo, GI’s new producer. Congrats Adam.

Have a nice week everyone!
-Sarah Pavis
