Academics
I'm in the class of 2012, and I currently attend Massachusetts Academy of Math and Science, affectionately known as Mass Academy. My previous (or sending) school was Shrewsbury High School (SHS). I've been a part of the Shrewsbury Public Schools District since fifth grade, at which time I moved from Bear, Delaware. During high school, I have been a part of many groups. They include:
- National Honor Society
- Spanish National Honor Society
- Intern at Perkins School for the Blind - Assistive Device Center, summer 2011
- SHS Highest Honor Roll of:
- Quarter 1-4 of 2008-09
- Quarter 1-4 of 2009-10
- Community Service:
- University of Massachusetts Memorial Hospital, summer 2009-2011
- Art Assistant at City View Discovery School, 2010-2011
- Math Tutoring, 2009-2011
- Americal Regional Math League (ARML)
- SHS Varsity Math Team
- SHS Freshmen Math Team
- SHS Engineering Club
- Habitat for Humanity
- SHS Excelsior Magazine
In middle school, I received a science award, a Spanish award, two Science Olympiad awards, the Principle's Award (an academic award given to the top two students in each of the five groups that each grade is organized into), and a MathCounts trophy for second place in a chapter competition (we reached states and got a medal for that, too).
Personal Facts
My favorite hobby is reading. However, what I read varies. Sometimes, I'll go to the library and read a novel. My favorite author is the recently deceased David Gemmel. I first started reading his books by accident when I mistyped a search term. The result was Ironhand's Daughter: A Novel of the Hawk Queen, which had a very interesting summary that made me want to read it. After doing so, I felt that his writing style and characterization was wonderful and began reading the other books that he wrote. Of course, there are also times when I read nonfiction, too. My interest in linguistics has made me begin reading introductory books like How Language Works by David Crystal. I have a few more just waiting to be read because, whenver I find something I want to learn more about, I always take out all of the books on the subject that seem useful from the library. I never actually get around to reading all of them, both because of limited time and the repetition of information between books (which is perfectly logical, considering that they're all on the same subject). Besides reading, my other favorite hobby is art. I dabble in many of them, but my favorites are sketching, calligraphy, and origami.
