My name is Keira Reid. I’m from Billerica, Massachusetts. I attended Billerica public schools until the 9th grade. For 9th and 10th grade, I went to Austin Preparatory in Reading, Massachusetts. My dad is a microwave engineer and my mom is a primary care physician. I have an older sister who graduated Billerica Memorial High School in 2023 and is now attending Boston College as a neuroscience major.
Some of my hobbies include skiing, crocheting, traveling, and listening to music. One of my favorite things to do is ski. I am a recreational downhill skier. I'm not on a team, but I ski at the Waterville Valley Ski Resort in New Hampshire. Another interest of mine, as previously stated is crocheting. I am still a beginner, but I have made a few shirts and other small projects. I also love to travel. Over the past year, I visited England, Scotland, Canada, and Colorado. I love music, my favorite artists are Taylor Swift and Noah Kahan.
My academic interests are best shown through my participation in extracurricular activities. At my sending school I participated in the math team and the Psychology Club. With the Psychology Club, I presented to my school about Mental Health Awareness Month. At Mass Academy, I am part of the biotechnology club and math team.
aFor one week in each the last three years, I went on medical service trips to the Dominican Republic. A few doctors and other highschool volunteers went to small communities near Barahona, DR. There, we would give check ups to all the kids in the local schools. Those of us who didn't have extensive medical training would take the children's vital signs before they got their check ups. We would also help the doctor out with organizing supplies or scribing for them. I will be attending this service trip again in June. Boston 25 News recently did a news segment about the trip. You can view it here.
Junior year, I volunteered at Abby Kelley Foster Charter Public School in Worcester, MA providing STEM lessons to middle and elementary school students. This was a part of Mass Academy’s STEM week. I spent two Mondays teaching lessons at the school. My group taught a lesson on bird beak adaptations and led an activity where the students got to explore how different bird beaks are better for different situations. The second week my group taught a lesson on the basics of kinetic and potential energy and did an activity where we made spool racers.
