STEM II (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) at the Mass Academy is a C/D term class that engages students in solving an engineering problem.
Students spend one and a half terms in teams developing their products. As part of their project, teams design and build a prototype of their product. In addition, they develop marketing tools that include a website, color brochure, and business cards. At the end of D term, each team presents their product to a panel of engineers.
The theme for this year as well as the past three years is Assistive Technology. Students design and build assistive devices to help clients with disabilities in their communities achieve their goals.
We ended the 2011 course with the UMass Lowell Assistive Technology Design Fair. The fair, May 14, was a showcase for team projects in Assistive Technology.
