Engineering Experience Program

Target age group: second year of gymnasium

Preparation time: 1 hour

Program time: 6 hours

Project Breakdown:

First class period: Guest lecturers share their experiences in engineering with students.

Second class period: Students visit IHK and speak with professors and college students.

LEGO Mindstorms Project

Target age group: first year of gymnasium

Preparation time: 1.5 hours

Program time: 6-10 hours

Project Breakdown:

First hour: Introduction to computer programming (smørrebrød) and project goal.

Middle hours: Students work in teams to design, build, and test interactive robots to achieve the given goal.

Last hour: Student groups exhibit their robots to the class and see which team’s robot best achieves the project goal and engineering topics are discussed.

Trebuchet Project

Target age group: year 8 of folkeskole

Preparation time: 2-3 hours

Program time: 6 hours

Project Breakdown:

First hour: Introduction to basic physics, math and structural principles necessary to build a trebuchet; demonstration with prefabricated trebuchet; introduction to kit of parts; introduction to project goal.

Middle hours: Students in groups plan their trebuchets, present a building plan, seek instructor approval, cut and drill parts with instructor supervision, assemble trebuchets and test them.

Last hour: Students test the trebuchets in front of the class and see which team’s trebuchet best achieves the goals of longest distance and highest accuracy.

Export Engineering Project

Target age group: year 8 of folkeskole

Preparation time: 1 hour

Program time: 6-8 hours

Project Breakdown:

First hour: Introduction to program setup and rules, students form groups, students brainstorm a challenge they would solve with an invention.

Middle hours: Students barter with other groups for needed supplies, assemble their product, and evaluate other groups’ products.

Final hour: Debriefing including discussion of the export engineering field.

Bridge Project

Target age group: year 9-10 of folkeskole

Preparation time: 2 hours

Program time: 6 hours

Project Breakdown:

First hour: Introduction to structural principles, kit of parts and project goals.

Middle hours: Student groups build bridges out of kit parts; preliminary testing.

Final hour: Students’ final bridges are tested in front of the class to see which group’s bridge holds the most weight per unit cost of material.

Windmill Project

Target age group: year 9-10 of folkeskole

Preparation time: 3 hours

Program time: 6 hours

Project Breakdown:

First hour: Introduction to basic electrical and mechanical principles necessary to build a windmill; demonstration with prefabricated windmill; introduction to kit of parts; introduction to project goal.

Middle hours: Students in groups plan their windmill, present a building plan, seek instructor approval, cut and drill parts with instructor supervision, assemble and test windmills.

Final hour: Students test the windmills in front of the class and see which team’s windmill produces the highest voltage.
