Determine the limitations of the linear
pendulum model.
The linear pendulum model
given in class is valid only so long as
is small enough to make
a reasonable approximation.
Construct a pendulum whose period you can
measure conveniently. Release the pendulum bob from rest from an
angle small enough to ensure the validity of the linear pendulum model.
Compare the measured period with the period predicted by
both the linear and the nonlinear (given in class) models.
Repeat the experiment with an initial displacement large enough
to render the linear model invalid. Again compare the measured period
with the values predicted by the linear and nonlinear models. Comment
on the relationships you observe.
What is the primary limitation in the linear pendulum model? In
the nonlinear pendulum model. What confidence do you have in these two
models?
