By ~EIizabeth Salazar Class of 2004\n\nSo this is the last article I will ever get to write for this fine, anime-centered newspaper. And since it is, these are my last words of non-academic wisdom for those whom I leave behind-` There IS something to do in Worcester. Pay attention all you whiny college kids who claim that there is nothing to do in this place: even though Worcester isn't a booming metropolis complete with high rise entertainment complexes, efficient public transportation, world famous museums and successful sports arenas... at least-it isn't a flat mid-western farmland. (Ohhhhh dis!) For those who have dished out this phrase more than once, I have a few questions for you:\n\nHave you dared venture beyond campus onto other streets, like Quinsigamond Ave. (home to Dollar's Worth, Port of Worcester Tattoo, The Miss Worcester Diner and nearby Coney Island) or Grafton Hill (home to ridiculously yummy Wholly Cannoli, and the crazy cult-like Quan Yin Vegetarian Restaurant)? Have you bothered talking to some of those random people you run into at coffee shops or music stores? Have you used Social Web to find out what's going on and where there might be cool restaurants or events happening? (www.socialweb.net) Have you ever been skating in elm park? Have you bothered to find places of interest (i.e. comic book shops, ethnic food markets, ethnic dance classes, museums, used cd & bookstores, parks, independent and foreign film cinemas, poetry readings, inde pendent art exhibits, local and non-local Hip- Hop, Punk, Hardcore,Jazz, Classical performances, even "Magic Card" game tournaments) or visited them, at least once? Have you bothered or ganizations involved with things of interest -. to you that are beyond campus? (International Rescue League, Habitat for Humanity, Abby House, Worcester Soccer Leagues, - HOPE Lodge, Worcester Artists Group, Worcester County Poet Association, Worcester Historical Society, Preservation Worcester, Social Justice 101, toname a few) Have you ever been to another college campus? (we've got 13, and 6 near campus) Have you ever been outside of Worcester to nearby towns like Spencer (visit St. - Joseph's Abby, a perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy the quiet of nature), Sutton (Purgatory Chasm, a hidden landmark within woods with 70 ft. granite walls great forrockclimbing)? You are intelligent people; don't suffer if you don't have to. You live in Worcester, you make it what it is.I mean, What if.. WPI -. was located in the middle of cornfield farmlands? Then you'd have something to complain about. (Oh yeah, one more thing: Save Tech News! You can complain all you want about 3 pages of Anime reviews, but unless you write about something of interest to you, it's still going to be there next week. )\n\n"Education is for improving the lives of others and for leaving your community and world better than. you found it." - Marian Wright Edelman

@@Graduate student interactions are notoriously limited to within departments. Viewing this as untapped potential, we propose an environment where we grads, and WPI as a whole, can capitalize on our ''social and academic growth''.@@\n\n@@We are calling it a Science Cross-Talk one department hosting another for an intimate yet informal lunch plus mini-lecture, with at least one grad from each department giving a 5 minute presentation of their research on a whiteboard.@@\n\nWe have two goals in mind. ''Social growth'' by getting grads out of their labs, talking to each other, and looking to ourselves as an easily available set of contacts for life beyond WPI; and ''Academic growth'' by exchanging ideas and promoting inter-disciplinary communication: the cross-talks. Food funds would be split between departments, and us, the GSG, the small number of grads, one department hosting another, makes the event more manageable and seem informal, and who knows? This could give rise to anything from new friendships and lab tips to great research ideas and business partnerships.\n\nWe sincerely hope this takes off and becomes and integral part of campus culture, maybe even positioning WPI as a champion of this idea, but we are first looking to get all departments involved, and are wondering if you think your department would be interested.\n\n!Upcoming SXT\n*Math and Chemistry. Created by Jeremy Ruston, here is how he describes this kind of website:\n\n//A TiddlyWiki is like a blog because it's divided up into neat little chunks, but it encourages you to read it by hyperlinking rather than sequentially: if you like, a non-linear blog analogue that binds the individual microcontent items into a cohesive whole. I think that TiddlyWiki represents a novel medium for writing, and will promote its own distinctive writing style.//\n\nAlso described as a wiki on a stick, this website is actually a wiki that fits in one file, using just HTML and ~JavaScript. Adding and modifying content is relatively simple - check out [[www.tiddlywiki.com|http://www.tiddlywiki.com]].

These facilities include the library, the gym and all athletic facilities, the College Computation Center and all other computing facilities, the Counseling and Student Development Center, the bookstore, etc. In addition, many departments may have special laboratories and lounges specifically for the use of graduate students. The Student Health Center is available to those graduate students who have paid the health fee.\n!Health Insurance\n''[links to more health insurance information coming soon]''\nMassachusetts state regulations require that all full-time graduate students maintain some health insurance policy. If a graduate student is not covered by insurance held by a parent or spouse, the student is required to have personal health insurance. A basic health insurance policy is available through WPI. This policy requires that each student also pay a health fee to be eligible to use the WPI Student Health Center. Information about the basic health insurance plan can be obtained from the Student Health Center, the Dean of Students Office, or the Office of Graduate Studies and Research. For information about any additional coverage which may be available to graduate students contact the GSG or the Office of Graduate Studies and Research.
