Regression Analysis

Your job this week is a bit different.  No new algorithms or problems; instead you may work in pairs and create a Web page extolling the uses, virtues and limits of Regression Analysis.  This will require that you review what you have done in  the past couple of weeks which should result in greater clarity. Your audience is other high school instructors of mathematics who presumably know nothing about regression analysis.

Tools:

            floppy disk

            partner

            Microsoft Word

            Maple and Excel (as needed)

            Equation Editor

Procedure

Begin in Word and think of this as a paper with the following areas:

            Overview:  what is Regression Analysis??

            Mathematical Foundations of Regression Analysis

steps of derivations not needed – only clear sense of how they

                        could be done

            Linear vs Quadratic vs Exponential

How Good a Fit?   the use of r/r2

            An Application

                        of your choice

            Technology

pros and cons of various pieces of technology

            The Secondary Curriculum

where might this fit in; suggestions

            Appendix: Terminology for the Novice

                        regression

                        least squares

                        interpolation

                        extrapolation

When finished simply do a “SAVE AS  and specify “Web Page” as the  file type.  Use a file name according to the following format

                           jd_as_regression.htm

where   jd  and “as”  are the initials of the team members.

Note on graphics and equations:  you may easily cut and paste from Maple and Equation Editor into Word.

I will move the files onto the course web site when they are complete so you can refer to your work.
