The Goat's Head Rivalry

The Goat's Head Rivalry is one of WPI's oldest and most valued traditions. Its story is one of the fight between classes, each earning the right to call itself the proprietor of the famed bronzed statue. Below are the rules set forth by this committee regarding the rivalry.

Goats Head Committee

I. Any discrepancies of these rules will be reviewed by the Goat's Head Committee.

II. The Goat's Head Trophy may not be stolen BY or FROM any member of the Goat's Head Committee

III. The Goat's Head Committee shall be made up of the following individuals: a member of the Student Alumni Society (appointed within), a member of Skull Senior Society (appointed within), a member of the Student Government Association (appointed within), a representative of the WPI faculty or staff exclusive of the Office of Alumni Relations, a representative of the WPI Office of Alumni Relations, and a member of the Student Activities Office. The WPI faculty and/or staff members shall be non-voting members of the committee.

Rules

I. The Office of Alumni Relations must know where the Trophy is at ALL times and receive updated information EVERY TIME that the Trophy is moved, even within possession of the same owner. When the Trophy changes hands the new owner of the Trophy must alert the Office of Alumni Relations that it is in their possession. This must be communicated by emailing ghc@wpi.edu. If it becomes necessary, WPI Administration and/or Campus Police will be notified of the Trophy's location.

II. The Goat's Head must be displayed by the owner during Homecoming, Founders' Day, Winter Carnival, Gompei's Birthday, Traditions Day and the Junior-Senior Mystery Event. It must be seen by a member of the Goat's Head Committee.

III. The Trophy may NOT be taken beyond the set borders under any condition and must remain in a secure location. The borders are defined on the map given to each class's representatives and posted at http://www.wpi.edu/~goat.

IV. At no time may the keeper or those associated with the keeper violate any of the Institute's conduct policies. Any violation of these policies may lead to disciplinary action within the WPI judicial system. V. If the keeper of the goats head trophy or those associated with the keeper violate any of the official rules, it must be returned to the goats head committee. The Trophy is property of WPI; if it becomes necessary WPI administration and or campus police will become involved.

VI. The Showing of the goats head trophy may not be done from a motor vehicle.

Returning and Engraving

I. The Goat's Head must be returned to the Goat's Head Committee before 9 a.m. the morning following the last official days of B and D term. It will be returned to the previous trophy keeper the following C and A-terms, respectively, or at the discretion of the Goat's Head Committee.

II. The Goat's Head Trophy cannot be defaced in any way and all engraving must be coordinated with the WPI Office of Alumni Relations. The Goat may be engraved with class year numerals only and no engraving of the goat should be larger than on half inch square (1/2 in2). Any person that steals the goat may have the Trophy inscribed by the Office of Alumni Relations at no charge.

III. Any person may possess the Goat; however, only the freshman and sophomore class rivalry events will determine the Goat Head's true keeper and winner of the Goats Head Rivalry. A Plaque will be maintained by the Office of Alumni Relations detailing the goats head keeper, to be displayed in a public location along with a picture of the new keeper.

IV. Actions associated with this tradition must be conducted within the guidelines of the established rules. No bodily harm may be inflicted on any participant in either procuring or protecting the Goat and no property harm will be tolerated.

V. The Office of Alumni Relations will determine the authenticity of the Goat's Head Trophy.
